Ok, not exactly. In last week’s SSS, I introduced my overworked Yin to Stacia Kelly‘s Yang… one DC Homicide Detective Ryan Calder. In this installment, Ryan is working on a case when he is caught off guard by a close friend, who puts him into quite a bind.
__
His phone chirped to life, beckoning his attention and calling him back to reality from his self-imposed realm of torture. He lifted the comm to his ear and barked. “Calder.”
“Well, Detective,” replied the cheerful voice, “I hope I haven’t caught you in a tough predicament.”
Ryan choked down the taste of shame. His impulsive response was self-serving and arrogant. That was no way to answer the call of a Holy Man. “Father Munoz, I apologize for my tone.”
“Please don’t, Mijo. You wouldn’t be you if you did.”
Ryan closed his eyes and did all he could not to bang the receiver against his skull. “How can I help you, Padre?”

This is from the upcoming novel, Ichi, penned by Stacia D. Kelly and me. Stay tuned for more.
Great snippet, I loved the interior dialog/descriptions, it really gave me a feel for the character…
Oh, self-imposed realms of torture — never good! Nicely done.
lol love it when detective’s get all frustrated
Great work with his frustration. Loved it.
Although I helped write the book, I do love Ryan’s personality. Makes him fun to write with.
Hah! BUSTED. I like the imagery of banging the reveived against his head. I think we’ve all been there. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Uh oh, never good to get caught by the padre, and it sounds like he knows Ryan too well. Great teaser.
What a great visual!
I would think the detective would be happy to be pulled from his self-imposed realm of torture, especially by a priest. *grin* This left me anxious for more. Good stuff.
The first sentence really drew me in. There is great imagery in this whole snippit!
