When I stand back and take a look at life, I find a have a whole lot in common with one of my lead characters. The Samurai series male protagonist, Detective Ryan Calder, and I are a lot alike. We both are madly in love with beautiful, smart, talented women. We both love rock music and driving fast. And now, we have one more thing in common…
…we have the same wheels.
Ryan’s ride is a 2015 police-issued Chevy Impala, with a whole bunch of bells and whistles. As of today, I’m the proud papa of a 2012 Impala LTZ, and I was amazed to find just how many features this bad boy has. Power everything, heated seats, SiriusXM radio, compass, tripometers, hell, the thing even tells me the individual tire pressure. Let me say my blushing bride and co-author, Stacia D. Kelly, is a big fan of the remote start and heated seats.
Ryan’s car is admittedly different. I’ve had the chance to do a little with creative license, combining some technologies we’ve written in to the story and some of the research I’ve read on the upcoming features of concept cars. I’ll never have some features of Ryan’s unmarked cruiser, because I’m not a cop, but there are plenty of cool aspects of the Impala that are fun to live out.
So, who the heck is Ryan anyway? Glad you asked. Ryan is an overworked homicide detective in Washington, DC circa 2015. He is first introduced in the upcoming first novel in the Urban Samurai series, “Ichi”.
“Ichi” introduces the warrior samurai Shia Ronin. Shia and her sisters are charged with protecting the world from all the things that go bump in the night. Ryan knows Shia from her cover story as the medical examiner. She’s got information on the victim in one of his homicide cases. Seeking to solve the case, the pair cross paths with some deadly forces, both human and otherwise.
Stick around for more previews of Ichi both here and over at Stacia’s site.
One Love!

Didn’t realize when I saw you this afternoon, Nick, that congratulations were in order. So–congratulations, and I hope you’ll enjoy every minute at the wheel!
This was so much fun to read, Nick. Well done. I had a Volvo several years ago with heated seats and loved them. Maybe I need to write about a cool car and tell my husband I need one for research!
