As part of the Write by the Rails authors group, I’m delighted to share stories, experience and tips with local writers from all sorts of genres. I can honestly say I’ve never had a poem posted up on this blog, and today, guest blogger Leigh Giza is going to change all that! Check out her poem, “I Brake for Worm”.

I BRAKE FOR WORM
By Leigh Giza

Returning home after
Working all day
I turn onto
The driveway apron
And quickly brake.
A fuzzy worm
Inches its way
Across my driveway,
Heading slowly towards
My neighbor’s yard
Where I’m guessing
It’ll stop and
Break for dinner.
If I were
Most people I’d
Run it over
With my car.
It’s only a
Worm, after all!
Nobody’s gonna care!
Nobody except me.
I can’t end
Its little life
Without diminishing mine
A little bit.

So, I brake
For something resembling
What I think
A newborn snake
Must look like
I hate snakes!
It seems like
An eternity passes
Before the worm
Reaches the grass
And I am
Able to finally
Inch slowly forward
Into the garage.

To my left
My neighbor watches
Me and shakes
His balding head.
He must think
I’m foolish, wasting
Time this way.
He scares me.
I’ve heard he
Kills insects for
No good reason.
With his shoe.

Guess I’d better
Warn the worm.

A little info about the poem: Written today, 2-11-14. Each line is three words in length. (in case you didn’t notice) but I don’t know of any name for a poem in which each line is the same length — if you do, please feel free to describe my poem using that mystery word. 🙂

  • Thanks for reminding us that darn it, worms are important too! Seriously, I enjoyed this poem very much Leigh. Keep them coming! And have one or two ready for you know, Open Mic!

  • LOVED!

I didn’t even notice the three words per line! I love all the rules and regulations of poetry. I love when people play with it masterfully. Like you did here.
