Every time I think I’m doing a swell job of marketing my freelance writing business, I take a look at how Nick and Stacia Kelly pace themselves in their daily cirque du soleil of music, training, speaking, health coaching, writing and business mentoring. And then I realize: I’m standing still.

And dogs don’t chase parked cars.

Since I began guest posting on the Write by the Rails Endless Possibilities Blog Tour six weeks ago, I have seen how Nick, Stacia and 10 other writers run their businesses, manage their websites, use social media to promote their blogs, and more.

As my dad would say, “Punkin’, you got to get out and hustle.” He was a salesman. Believe me, he knew how to hustle. The words may change with the generation, but it’s the same thing. I need to do a better job of marketing myself.

Marketing is not just standing there and saying, “Buy my book.”  Or, in my case, “Hire me to write for you.”

I need to “create lasting connections with people through a focus on being relentlessly helpful.” That’s marketing. That’s what Nick and Stacia do.

They’ve already been relentlessly helpful to me. Stacia once spent several hours at a Starbucks helping me learn Scrivener.

Nick recently sold a table full of Write by the Railers at Grounds Central Station on laptop “skins” or covers.  He said, if you’re going to sit in a coffee shop for an hour working on your second book, you might as well be promoting your first book on your laptop cover.

Both Nick and Stacia have done Write by the Rails workshops on marketing and “couples who collaborate” with Tee Morrisand Philippa Ballantine.

So, thanks to them, I’ve launched my own blog, ordered new business cards and joined 1 Million Cups Prince William, a meet-up of entrepreneurs that gathers every Wednesday morning at the Hylton Center for creative problem-solving. I’m hustlin’.
