We’re back in New York and this time around, we’re hanging out in Chinatown. Fortunately for us, we happen to be very close to some of the set locations for one of our recently watched shows. It turns out we were just blocks away from not one, not two, but three locations used in Marvel’s Iron Fist. The most recent in Netflix‘s series of Marvel heroes, Iron Fist tells the story of Danny Rand (Finn Jones.)
Danny disappeared 15 years before the start of the series, and it opens with his return to New York. He approaches his family’s business, only to find himself exiled. He and his parents crashed in the Himalayas, and he claims to have been trained in martial arts by monks from a forgotten city. The series is far from perfect, failing to hit the high marks set by Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. However, there is lots of action. The female characters carry the show (most notably Jessica Henwick and Rosario Dawson.)
Iron Fist Locations
In one of her earlier scenes, sensei Colleen Wing (Henwick) is being apparently chased by several young men and women. They follow her through a skate park. Specifically, this is Coleman Square Playground, located under the Manhattan Bridge. Colleen dispatches them quickly in one of the first scenes that establishes her martial arts prowess. Almost never without her sword, Wing is by far the most dominant fighter in the series.
Colleen Wing’s Chikara Dojo is located right by the skate park, at 47 Munroe Street. In the series, Wing’s dojo is upstairs, which is featured in several episodes. The dojo gets trashed, plays host to a date-not-date between Danny and Colleen, and is home to a number of fight scenes. The actual location is Guang Junche Ng, Inc.
The Hatchet Gang faces off with Danny in the middle act of the series. He jumps right into the middle of a gang war including a Chinese gang that wields hatchets. Their headquarters is in the back of a Chinese restaurant, which is used as a front for laundering and private meetings. This restaurant is real, even if the gang is not. The restaurant used in the film is the Golden Sand Restaurant, located at 39 East Broadway.
The New York Supreme Court building and Courthouse have been locations for a myriad of movies. Since we’re talking Marvel and Netflix, however, I wanted to throw this one in. In Season One of Jessica Jones, Jessica (Kristen Ritter) confronts Jeri Hogarth (Carrie Ann Moss) on the steps of the Supreme Court building. We grabbed a shot of that while we were exploring. Other credits filmed there include 12 Angry Men and Carlito’s Way, among others.
Jessica Jones Season 2 is filming now, but it’s a bit too far uptown for us. Any set pics? Please share!
