Music for Moms: Part 1 of 3 – Relaxation

(I was asked to be a guest over at www.9monthsin8monthsout.com to help new moms find the healing powers of music.  Here’s my post.)

You’re going to be a mom.  You have the beautiful gift of life growing inside you. You are experiencing the most amazing transformation any human being can ever experience.

Stressed yet?

Stress is to be expected with your first journey into motherhood.  A mother can’t explain what the journey is like to a pregnant mom any better than someone could explain being left-handed or blind. It’s something you just have to experience.  Your ride is going to be different than hers. The only constant is change…your body, your schedule, your priorities, what affects you, what makes you cry, what inspires you, what matters.  It’s a safe bet that much of that is about to change.

Change brings the unknown, and the unknown many times brings stress.  This is a step into the void, where you don’t have all the answers, you can’t control what happens next, and you can’t dictate the path you’re going to take.  Those are challenging scenarios, but they don’t have to incite panic.  Stress is manageable. So, my humble advice is to take some time out from the daily grind, breathe, focus, and let the right music help you calm down and relax.  Your growing baby needs sleep, and so do you.

My goal is to find you a range of music that you may find soothing, to include some artists you know (and some that you don’t), and to craft a playlist that both you and your baby can enjoy as you grow together.  Some suggestions:

  • “Just to See You” Lowen & Navarro (folk) A true to the heart honest love song
  • “Atlantic” Eddie from Ohio (folk) A soft song about true love miles apart
  • Slow Dancing in a Burning RoomJohn Mayer (pop) an anthem to a tragic relationship
  • “Crash into Me” Dave Matthews Band (pop) heartfelt disclosure of love to an unsuspecting woman
  • “All the Pretty Girls Leave Town” Tim Easton (folk) nice take on the dreams of Midwest girls’ Hollywood dreams
  • “Building a Mystery” Sarah McLachlan (pop) haunting tale in minor key
  • “Past the Mission” Tori Amos (pop) another strange tale hosted by piano and strings
  • “As it Fades” VNV Nation (dance) Good series of strings to help with sleep
  • “Sleep” Conjure One (feat. Marie-Claire D’Ubaldo) (dance) sleep…with me…tonight…
  • Bonus Track: “Tears from the Moon” Conjure One (feat. Sinead O’Connor) in case you can’t sleep
Check back for parts 2 & 3 in the upcoming weeks!
